Sticker Shock Program
OPERATION STICKER SHOCK CONDUCTED ON DECEMBER 10, 2011 BY SOUTH COUNTY YOUTH NETWORK AND THE MT. VERNON POLICE STATION
Local store managers from Beacon Mall’s Giant Food Store, Hybla Valley’s Shopper’s Food Warehouse and Engleside’s Safeway allowed local high and middle school students to affix bright red stickers on wine, beer and liquor containers.
Students and adults wearing bright red tee-shirts and riding in a Department of Neighborhood and Community Services mini-bus were escorted by Mt. Vernon Station Police Officers and Special Agent Jankowski from the VA ABC Regional District Office.
Penalties for underage drinking include:
*loss of participating in extracurricular school activities * forfeiting a driver’s license * suspension/expulsion from school
Adults who provide alcohol to those under 21 years old are also legally liable. Virginia law provides for the possibility of a $2,500 fine per underage person provided alcohol and the loss of an adult driver’s license and/or 1 year in jail. In addition, personal property can be confiscated.
The bright red stickers are a reminder to stop before you violate underage drinking laws by buying or providing alcohol to those under 21.
